New bill curbs spending and expands hate crimes law

October 29, 2009

The president recently signed a defense bill that reportedly cuts wasteful spending and expands hate crimes law.

Washington, D.C (WiredPRNews.com) – President Barack Obama signed a new bill on Wednesday that will reportedly help curb wasteful spending and also expand federal hate crimes law. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the new defense bill will eliminate some projects that have been deemed as costly and unnecessary, and also includes provisions that make violence based on sexual orientation, gender, and disability a hate crime.

Obama is quoted by the AP as stating of the bill with regards to wasteful spending, “When Secretary Gates and I first proposed going after some of these wasteful projects, there were a lot of people who didn’t think it was possible, who were certain we were going to lose, who were certain that we were going to get steamrolled… Today, we have proven them wrong.”

Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is further quoted by the AP as stating of the included hate crime provisions, “This is a landmark step in eliminating the kind of hate motivated violence that has taken the lives of so many in our community.”
