Nearly a decade after orchestrating the horrific 9/11 attacks that claimed 2,996 lives, al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden met his end at the hands of US forces.
Netflix has just released an enthralling new three-part docu-series called American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden, which premiered on the streaming service today (March 10).
The documentary delves into the personal stories of those deeply involved in the ten-year pursuit, featuring interviews with pivotal members of the CIA, FBI, and Navy SEALs.
The series' climactic moments unfold in the latter part of the final episode, detailing the tense operation to take down Bin Laden, authorized by then-president Barack Obama.
The mission, known as Operation Neptune Spear, commenced on May 1, 2011, when US Navy SEALs infiltrated Bin Laden's stronghold in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The documentary includes commentary from former Navy SEAL Robert O'Neill, who shares his intense experiences during the raid.
The SEAL team encountered and eliminated several individuals, including Bin Laden's son Hamza, before two officers reached the third floor where Bin Laden was concealed.
As Robert and his fellow officer approached, they detected movement behind a curtain. Robert recounts: "These could be suicide bombers, but we can beat them, but we've gotta go now."
He continued: "I turn this way and standing in front of me, two feet away is Osama Bin Laden.. It was one of those moments in life where things slow down.
"He's taller than I thought, he's skinnier than I thought, his beard was grey/white, but I recognized his nose, this is definitely him. He's not surrendering, he's a threat, not only to me but to my entire team, he has to die," Robert revealed.
Following this assessment, Bin Laden was fatally shot in the head and chest. The elite Navy SEALs unit then took custody of his body, ensuring it was transported to Afghanistan to be positively identified.
Afterward, they undertook an 850-mile trek to the Arabian Sea where Bin Laden was given a sea burial compliant with Islamic practices. It was on May 1, 2011, when President Obama addressed the nation live to report Bin Laden's passing, which led scores of people to join in the streets of Washington, DC, to listen to the historic broadcast.
