RIVERDALE, Md. (AP) — A rookie police officer trying to rescue three people who had fallen through ice in Maryland fell into the water himself.

News outlets report two Prince George’s County police officers were dispatched to a park pond Sunday afternoon on a report of three men falling through ice.

Police spokesman Cpl. Tyler Hunter says Timothy Tully and his trainer went onto the ice and Tully fell into the “pretty deep” pond. Tully hoisted himself and one man out of the water, and Prince George’s County firefighters extricated the other two with ropes and ladders.

Tully and two others were treated for hypothermia and released.

Hunter says Tully, who was on his 14th day of street duty, was eager to resume his shift, but was given the rest of the night off.
