The Rev. Jay Lawlor, priest and former economist at Harvard University, talks to Our Economic Policy about economic justice and sustainable development.

Jesus advocated for more than helping the poor and oppressed, he demanded a just economic system. I don't think there is any question faith and economic justice go hand-in-hand.”

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US, February 14, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Rev. Jay Lawlor sat down with Our Economic Policy and discussed his work for economic justice and support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the United States and globally. In asking him about the intersection of faith and economics, the Rev. Jay Lawlor replied: "Economic justice is central to God’s message. Jesus impressed this upon his first disciples. Jesus advocated for more than helping the poor and oppressed, he demanded a just economic system. I don't think there is any question faith and economic justice go hand-in-hand."

When asked about becoming a priest when he had a fulfilling career as an economist, the Rev. Lawlor admitted it was difficult to leave his research position at Harvard's Center for International Development. "My work at CID was very rewarding. I felt I was living my Baptismal Covenant in seeking justice as I supported sustainable development initiatives. Nonetheless, he added "the call to serve God in ordained ministry was one I could not turn down."

He elaborated by stating he would continue to advocate for economic justice with the added benefit of speaking as someone trained in both economics and theology. In fact, his role as an ordained leader helped advance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) -- successors to the Sustainable Development Goals -- as a top mission priority for The Episcopal Church.

Our Economic Policy then asked the Rev. Lawlor about his recent announcement that he was supporting America's Goals as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. "America's Goals are consistent with the biblical testimony of advocating for an economy of restoration. Like the Millennium Development Goals before them, the Sustainable Development Goals will help lift millions globally out of poverty. Americas Goals can inspire positive change and offer a blueprint for the United States toward economic and environmental justice in our own country," said the Rev. Jay Lawlor.

His support of America's Goals are part of his efforts in founding the The Faith Network for Economic Justice (FNEJ) which seeks to reclaim the biblical narrative which places economic justice advocacy at the center of faith. The Rev. Jay Lawlor said that "A key concept for FNEJ is partnering with faith groups and organizations of good will in advocating for actionable solutions toward economic justice."
