Hoyer Statement on President Trump’s Comments that Iranians “Can Do What They Want” In Syria

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader-Elect Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening in response to President Trump's comments earlier today that Iranians can "do what they want" in Syria:

“It is unconscionable that a President of the United States would sit in the White House and say that Iran and its proxies ought to be allowed to take up positions on the borders of our closest regional allies.  Coupled with his dangerous and reckless announcement last month removing U.S. forces from Syria, President Trump’s statement today highlights his bankrupt foreign policy, one which creates a vacuum for Iran, Russia, and other adversaries to exploit.    “Because the Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces has demonstrated such a willful and pernicious ignorance of core U.S. security interests, it is crucial to reiterate American policy that has been the bedrock of our approach to the world for the last fifty years and endorsed by Republican and Democratic presidents alike: the United States is strong because we stand by our allies.  We stand with Israel and Jordan in their quests for peace and security.  We are committed to thwarting Iran’s terrorist presence in the region.  Allowing Iran to position its forces and its proxies on the borders of Jordan and Israel would undermine those core objectives.  It would provide Iran with a base for launching rockets, supporting terrorist activities, and destabilizing governments.   “I strongly urge the President to issue a statement making clear that Iran must not be allowed to gain a permanent foothold in Syria from which it can threaten rocket attacks on Israel and sow instability in Jordan.”
