Hoyer: Exploiting Anti-Semitism for Partisan Advantage is Dangerous and Wrong

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on recent actions taken by President Trump and Congressional Republican leadership that sow division and undermine bipartisan support for Israel:

“Exploiting anti-Semitism for partisan advantage is dangerous and wrong. It is misleading on the facts, destructive to the critical bipartisan support that Israel has always enjoyed and that has been so important to its security and success, and a risk to the unity of our country.    “The President’s divisive tweets, his comments at a recent fundraiser, and the Republican Conference Chair’s texts, can have only one aim: to sow fear among Jewish people and divisions among Americans.  These actions should cease immediately. They are unworthy of officials of high office and public trust. They also profoundly misrepresent and ignore the very strong condemnation issued by the House Democratic leadership of the use of anti-Semitic stereotypes to incite false, inflammatory, and dangerous views about Jews in our country and around the world.

“These statements and actions by Republican leaders also dangerously ignore the unnerving phenomenon of their Alt-Right supporters embracing the use of swastikas and anti-Semitic epithets in our country’s public spaces and online. Furthermore, it attempts to deflect from the fact that the Chair of the Republican Conference voted against the House resolution that represented a strong and unequivocal rejection and condemnation of anti-Semitism and other manifestations of hate and prejudice and was supported by the overwhelming majority of the House. This divisive rhetoric and actions must end immediately, and I call on the President and Congressional Republicans to stop.”
